iHeartMedia Announces New Business Operating Structure
New Structure Highlights Unique Financial Strengths Of Both Its Digital Audio and Multiplatform Businesses
Company’s Digital Audio Business Will Operate as iHeartMedia Digital Audio Group; Industry-Leading Broadcast Radio Business Will Be Part of iHeartMedia Multiplatform Group
New Structure Reflects Increasing Size and Importance of Company’s Digital Businesses
New York, NY — February 25, 2021 – iHeartMedia, Inc. (NASDAQ: IHRT), the leading audio company in America by reach, announced today a new operating structure under which its Digital Audio Group business, which includes its successful iHeartRadio digital service as well as its industry-leading podcasting business, will publicly report its financials separately from its Multiplatform Group business, which includes its broadcast radio assets. Each group will now operate as a separate reportable segment with dedicated management.
As of Q4, the iHeartMedia Digital Audio Group encompassed almost 20% of the company’s consolidated revenue and 23% of its earnings, and in Q4 2020 grew revenue by 53% year-over-year and Adjusted EBITDA by 74% year-over-year [i]. The company expects the Digital Audio Group will continue to grow as an increasing proportion of its business in the future. Separate reporting of these two operating segments will provide improved visibility into the underlying performances, results and margin profiles of these distinct audio-driven businesses.
The company has created a management structure for each business reportable segment that will both strengthen and tighten the focus of these groups and enable them to work closely together to deliver industry-leading products and services to benefit all of the company’s marketing and advertising partners across iHeart’s full array of platforms and products, including broadcast radio, digital streaming, podcasts, social, data, live events, its SmartAudio suite of data targeting and attribution products and its digital advertising technology companies. Both segments will continue to report to Bob Pittman, iHeartMedia Chairman and CEO, and Rich Bressler, iHeartMedia President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer.
The iHeartMedia Digital Audio Group
The iHeartMedia Digital Audio Group includes the company’s fast-growing and high-profile podcasting business — iHeartMedia is the number one podcast publisher in downloads, unique listeners, revenue and earnings — as well as the industry-leading iHeartRadio digital service; the company’s digital sites, newsletters, digital services and programs; and its digital advertising technology companies, including Jelli, RadioJar, Unified and Voxnest, and will also include the recently-announced Triton Digital upon completion of the acquisition. The iHeartMedia Digital Audio Group will be led as a team by Conal Byrne as Chief Executive Officer and Darren Davis as Chief Operating Officer, with Carter Brokaw serving as the President of Digital Revenue and Jessica Jerrick as Executive Vice President of Digital Distribution and Platform Partnerships.
The iHeartMedia Multiplatform Group
The iHeartMedia Multiplatform Group represents almost 75% of iHeartMedia’s revenue and remains the foundation business that has been at the heart of the company’s success, playing an important role in building its successful digital and podcasting businesses.
The iHeartMedia Multiplatform Group includes the iHeartMedia Markets Group, with its 860+ radio stations in 160 markets; the company’s live and virtual events business; and its National Sales organization, which will continue meeting the needs of advertising partners using iHeartMedia’s full array of products, from broadcast radio and events to its SmartAudio suite of data targeting and attribution products, which allows informed digital-like planning against targeted audiences with the benefit of broadcast scale and impact; as well as using all of the products from the iHeartMedia Digital Audio Group. The industry’s largest Networks business, Premiere Networks, which includes the Total Traffic and Weather Network; and BIN: Black Information Network, the first and only 24/7 national and local all news audio service for the Black community, will also join this group.
With its broadcast radio stations alone, the Multiplatform Group reaches more people every month than any other audio or media company in America and has twice the audience of the next largest radio company.
The iHeartMedia Multiplatform Group will be led by Greg Ashlock as Chief Executive Officer and Tim Castelli as Chief Revenue Officer. In addition, Julie Talbott joins this group in her role as President, Premiere Networks; Hartley Adkins will become President of the Markets Group; Jeff Howard remains President of National Sales and Tony Coles as President of BIN: Black Information Network.
“These new reportable segments will enable us to strengthen the mission and tighten the focus of both the iHeart Digital Audio Group and the iHeart Multiplatform Group, while accelerating our ability to deliver industry-leading products and services to our listeners and advertising partners across all of our platforms,” said Bob Pittman. “Creating these two business reportable segments will allow us to provide the investment community with increased visibility into the financial results of each segment – enabling them to better appreciate the strong growth and success of our digital businesses, including our industry-leading podcast business, as well as the continued strength of our broadcast radio and marquee events businesses.”
[i] Segment Adjusted EBITDA will be the measure of profit or loss reported to the Company’s chief operating decision maker for purposes of making decisions about allocating resources to each segment and assessing each segment’s performance in accordance with GAAP.
Shondaland Audio and iHeartMedia to Launch Laverne Cox-Hosted Podcast
As host and producer of “The Laverne Cox Show,” the actress and Emmy-winning producer deepens her relationship with Shondaland as she stars in the upcoming “Inventing Anna” series
Los Angeles, CA – Nov 21, 2020 – Today, Shondaland Audio, a growing podcast network of original inclusive and informative podcasts, with partner iHeartMedia, the No. 1 commercial podcast publisher globally, announced that “The Laverne Cox Show” (working title), a weekly podcast series hosted by the Emmy-nominated actress, Emmy-winning producer, and equal rights activist Laverne Cox will debut in February 2021.
Each week, The Laverne Cox Show (wt) will feature intimate conversations with guests who provoke thought and potentially new outlooks. The show was created in hopes that it may foster perspectives that might inspire new behavior in each of us, to in turn get us closer to becoming the very best versions of ourselves, all the while inviting Laverne, guests, and listeners to undergo a spiritual makeover together.
Cox says, “I'm thrilled to be continuing and expanding my relationship with Shondaland by doing my first podcast with Shonda's amazing team along with iHeartRadio. I can't wait for everyone to hear the incredibly interesting conversations I have had with my guests.”
“Laverne Cox is a one-of-a-kind talent and we are so excited that our Shondaland Audio division provides us the opportunity to continue our relationship with her,” says Sandie Bailey, Shondaland Chief Design and Digital Media Officer. “We all know her onscreen talents and her role as a producer, but this show affords Laverne the opportunity to produce something very personal. She's clearly interested in engaging her listeners and herself in ways she hasn't before. And we’re committed to supporting her in doing just that.”
Co-produced with iHeartRadio, “The Laverne Cox Show” (wt) joins a lineup of other podcasts under the Shondaland Audio slate, further expanding Shondaland’s mission of storytelling across formats, genres, and mediums. The upcoming podcast is Cox’s second project with Shondaland, with the first being “Inventing Anna,” the upcoming Shonda Rhimes-created limited series for Netflix about the Instagram-legendary German heiress, Anna Delvey who stole the hearts of New York’s social scene, which is currently in production and slated for release next year.
Early next year, Shondaland Audio and iHeartMedia will also premiere a companion podcast to Shondaland’s highly-anticipated regency era series “Bridgerton,” debuting on Netflix on Christmas Day. The upcoming behind the scenes Bridgerton podcast, like “The Laverne Cox Show” (wt) marks Shondaland’s focus on the creation of synergistic opportunities to connect its various content divisions, Shondaland Audio, Shondaland.com and its streaming partnership with Netflix.
In August, Shondaland Audio and iHeartMedia launched three new iHeartRadio Original Podcasts; “You Down? with Obama’s Other Daughters” hosted by the Black female comedy troupe of the same name, “Go Ask Ali” hosted by actress and author Ali Wentworth, and “Criminalia,” a historical true-crime podcast with a playful take on the genre, hosted by veteran podcaster Holly Frey and co-host Maria Trimarchi. Next year, a podcast from producer dream hampton, “#Matter,” and “American Coup” will also debut, with the latter two as Shondaland Audio’s first foray into scripted podcasts. Shondaland Audio’s first podcast, “Katie’s Crib,” hosted by “Scandal” and “Waitress” actress Katie Lowes is currently in its third season.
“The Laverne Cox Show” (wt) and the slate of Shondaland Audio podcasts are distributed by the iHeartPodcast Network.
With various “firsts” in her already impressive career, Laverne Cox is a four-time Emmy-nominated actress, Emmy-winning producer and a prominent equal rights advocate and public speaker. Cox is best known for her groundbreaking role of Sophia Burset in the critically-acclaimed Netflix original series “Orange is The New Black.” This role helped Cox become the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for a Primetime acting Emmy and made her the first Trans woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television series. Cox can next be seen in Focus Features’ “Promising Young Woman” and Shonda Rhimes’ limited series “Inventing Anna.” She is also the Executive Producer of Disclosure, currently streaming on Netflix. Black Football Star's Mysterious Death in Deep South Examined in New Podcast Series
NEW YORK and ROCK HILL, S.C. – January 25, 2021 – iHeartMedia, the No. 1 podcast publisher globally, and McClatchy, a leading local media company with 30 newsrooms across the country, today announced “Return Man,” a new narrative podcast investigating the mysterious death of former pro-football player Jim Duncan. The first episode of the eight-part series will be available January 26, distributed through the iHeartPodcast Network and available on iHeartRadio and wherever listeners get their favorite podcasts. The remaining seven episodes will post weekly each Tuesday beginning February 2. Listen to the trailer now.
Duncan was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in 1968, nearly two decades before the team moved to Indianapolis. According to the official account of his death, he entered the Lancaster, S.C., police station on the morning of October 20, 1972. Police said the 26-year-old Duncan walked up behind a lieutenant, and without saying a word ripped the officer's revolver from his holster, stepped back, and shot himself in the head. For half a century, his family and an entire community have searched for answers.
Duncan was an NFL star as a kickoff return man and defensive back for the Baltimore Colts. He led the league in kickoff return yards in 1970, and that same season helped lead the Colts to the Super Bowl title. Two years later, authorities say, Duncan died by suicide inside the police station of his small hometown of Lancaster, S.C. “Return Man” is based on the reporting of Bret McCormick, former sports editor for McClatchy's Rock Hill, S.C. news outlet, The Herald. In addition to the podcast, The Herald has created a seven-part text series and short documentary video about the case.
“Even though he died nearly 50 years ago, Duncan's death and the events that followed remain relevant in light of current events,” said McCormick, who also narrates all eight half-hour episodes. “Officials seemed to wall off any hope of finding out exactly what happened on that day. And for decades, the remarkable life and perplexing death of Lancaster's only Super Bowl champion has been almost completely erased from the town's history.”
And, there was never any charge of wrongdoing.
“This investigation represents a significant investment for our small but ambitious newsroom, while also demonstrating the power and importance of local journalism,” said Cliff Harrington, Executive Editor of The Herald. “Bret's dogged determination and perseverance are emblematic of the way The Herald has proudly served our community for almost 150 years.”
“The depth of reporting presented in ‘Return Man' is what makes this podcast and ‘Longshot' series so powerful,” said Kristin Roberts, McClatchy's Senior Vice President, News. “The listener hears directly from Mr. Duncan's family, his coaches and his neighbors. We hear their voices tell the stories of his life. And through them, we take a journey that grapples with the great unanswered questions surrounding the death of a man who was both local hero and a national athlete. We look forward to working with iHeartMedia to bring this important local story to listeners nationwide.”
“This is an exciting collaboration with one of the country's premier local media companies that has a rich history of outstanding narrative journalism,” said Conal Byrne, President of the iHeartPodcast Network. “This is one of the things that podcasting does best: longform storytelling around layered, complex subject matters that may have fallen off our collective radar. We are so excited to collaborate with McClatchy to bring ‘Return Man' and the ‘Longshot' anthology to podcast listeners across the country.”
“Return Man” is the first season in a new anthology of character-driven audio documentaries co-produced by iHeartRadio and McClatchy, called “Longshot.” The series focuses exclusively on the intersection of sports and social change.
Listeners can visit iHeart.com/apps to download the iHeartRadio app and listen to “Return Man” on their favorite devices. Plus, fans can follow “Return Man” to be alerted when new episodes post.
