Radio One, Inc. Announces That Barry Mayo Has Been Named President of the Radio Division

Radio One, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROIAK and ROIA) announced yesterday that effective immediately Barry Mayo will become President of the Radio Division, reporting to Alfred C. Liggins, III, who will continue as Chief Executive Officer.

Alfred C. Liggins, III, Radio One’s CEO stated, “I am thrilled to announce that Barry Mayo has joined our team fulltime. He has been a consultant to the company for the past year bringing his knowledge and passion about everything in radio to the company. Barry is a legend in urban media and we are fortunate to be able to have someone with his expertise fill such a critical role.”

Commenting on his new position, Mr. Mayo stated, “I have known Alfred Liggins and Cathy Hughes for over 30 years and have watched with admiration as they built a media powerhouse in the African American and urban space.” Mr. Mayo also said, “We are no longer in the radio business, we are in the ‘audio entertainment business’ and we need to leverage our products well beyond the terrestrial signals we are licensed to operate. I consider this an opportunity of a lifetime and look forward to working with Radio One’s employees, listeners and advertisers to further solidify our position as the destination for compelling and entertaining content.”

Mr. Mayo brings over 30 years of operating experience to Radio One, including almost eight as President of a successful, publicly-traded pure play radio group, Broadcast Partners. (BPIX: Nasdaq). He began as a Program Director and his reputation as an innovative radio programmer spread quickly throughout the industry. In the 1980s, he helped create one of the largest urban stations in the country, WRKS-FM, in New York. Three years after joining the programming staff at WRKS-FM, Mr. Mayo became Vice President and General Manager of that station. In 1988, he and a group of partners founded Broadcast Partners. Originally a five-station network, Broadcast Partners grew under Mr. Mayo’s guidance into an eleven-station, publicly traded company with stations in Dallas, New York, Chicago and Charlotte. In 1995, Mayo sold his share of Broadcast Partners and founded Mayomedia, a media consulting firm specializing in urban markets. In 2003, he was recruited back to New York to become the Senior Vice President and Market Manager for Emmis Radio. He left Emmis Radio in 2006 to resume his consulting career and began working with Radio One in July 2006.
