Top of the Country: The Final Weeks

Speaking of our Top of the Country competition…we’re into our final weeks of the contest which will award one act $25,000 & songwriting camps with collaborations in Nashville and on Peller Island in British Columbia.  That’s in addition to their already stellar performances at our summer festivals and one final show coming up during Canadian Country Music Week in Hamilton for the CCMA Awards. The Golden God himself, Robert Plant, is turning 70 on August 20.
To commemorate the birthday of one of the most recognizable voices in rock ‘n’ roll as well as the continued 50th anniversary of Led Zeppelin, Deep Tracks (Ch. 27) is diving into the archives to encore two exclusive radio events. Hear a SiriusXM Artist Confidential with Plant recorded in March 2005 and a SiriusXM Town Hall with Plant recorded in October 2017.

While discussing with SiriusXM host David Fricke his time as the frontman for Zeppelin and his enormously successful solo work, Plant described how he draws inspiration for songs, starting with the fact that he “always write[s] stuff down.”

“I think I’m always observant,” he said. “I see. I hear. I remark at the ridiculousness of my condition, and that kind of quite often gives me good fuel to sing about characters in songs who are actually me, but maybe they’re not.”

Hear the SiriusXM Artist Confidential this Monday at 6 am and 2 pm ET and hear the SiriusXM Town Hall the same day at 10 am and 4 pm ET.

Listen live to SiriusXM Deep Tracks now.

The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has passed away at the age of 76 from advanced pancreatic cancer.
According to The Associated Press, publicist Gwendolyn Quinn revealed to the AP through a family statement that Franklin died Thursday at 9:50 a.m. at her home in Detroit.

The statement said:

In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds. We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.

Join us as Soul Town (Ch. 49) becomes The Aretha Franklin Tribute Channel in honour of her contribution to popular music. The weeklong channel will feature music from her iconic career as well as archival interviews and tributes from fans, friends, and family.

Listen live to SiriusXM VOLUME and SiriusXM Soul Town to follow the sad news and celebrate Aretha Franklin’s legacy.

A giant of American journalism, Seymour Hersh, joins me this week on “Krystal Nation” on Canada Talks. Hersh won the Pulitzer Prize in 1970 for his expose on the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War. He has also, barring teeth, exposed and chronicled subjects as diverse as civil rights battles, Watergate, CIA domestic spying, Abu Ghraib prison and the dark side of both John F. Kennedy and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. In one of his latest, “Killing Bin Laden”, Hersh details what really happened on that fateful night with the Navy Seal targeted strike and the many-faced Pakistani government who, it appears, had hidden Bin Laden for years.
An iconoclast — millennials prefer the phrase “disrupter”— I prefer the term “crap disturber”, Hersh has added much to our understanding of events and people: telling readers about both “the fish” and “the sea” — the specific personages and the general context and conditions of the subjects themselves.

Always providing background and analysis, combined with a deep exploration of the facts, Hersh is the epitome of investigative journalism and he underscores an alert that this could be a dying art in America — with both declining print revenues and the present failure of digital media to truly pick up the slack from analog newsrooms: there are simply fewer reporters doing Seymour Hersh’s old job.

His latest book is his autobiography, “Reporter”. In it, Hersh doesn’t let his prose get in the way of his own story. It seems to almost tell itself and has the easy, unselfconscious air of a guy telling you what happened as would a friendly stranger reflecting upon a captivating story from a bar stool. Only Hersh’s story is the stuff of bearing witness to American history: Seymour Hersh, the retired staff writer for the New Yorker and the New York Times, has written an autobiography that essentially is a clear-eyed biography of the nation itself.

Hear the show:

Thursday, August 16th at 7 pm ET
Saturday, August 18th at 10 am ET
Sunday, August 19th at  7 am, 11 am, and 6 pm ET

In this day and age, vehicles are virtually a necessity. Almost all of us own at least one vehicle with many households owning 2 or more.  Although vehicle manufacturers are constantly improving the materials used in the manufacture of vehicles, corrosion is still a major issue especially in North America.  Described by some as the “rust belt,” the strip across southern Canada and the Northern United States is one of the most corrosive environments in the world.   This winter has reminded all of us of the extreme temperatures that are possible in this part of the world.  In addition, the abundance of de-icing chemicals being used on our roads combined with the high humidity in warmer months is a recipe rust.  Chemicals like magnesium chloride and calcium chloride are extremely effective at keeping our roads safe but unfortunately are far more likely to cause rust on your vehicle than the typical road-salt of yesteryear.
Your vehicle may look great now, or even next year but if left unprotected virtually every vehicle or piece of equipment will eventually rust.  “Taking steps now to protect against corrosion is not just proper vehicle maintenance but will also give you peace of mind knowing that you have done all you can to protect your investment, says Freeman Young, president of Krown Rust Control System.  “Corrosion of vehicles shortens their lifecycle, can cause the failure of various mechanical and electrical parts and can even compromise the vehicle’s safety.”

Proper maintenance of a vehicle including the use of a rust protection product brings numerous benefits:

  1. A better-looking vehicle – Although “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” no one would argue that a clean, rust-free vehicle isn’t more attractive than one that is rusty. The pride of owning something that still looks good years down the road may be subjective but is still one of the benefits of rust protection.
  2. Higher resale value – Vehicles that are free of rust will sell quicker and for more money at both the retail and wholesale level.
  3. Longer lifecycle – Vehicles that don’t rust, last longer both mechanically and from a body panel standpoint.
  4. Reduced repair costs – Vehicles that are properly protected against corrosion will generally have fewer maintenance issues. Annual “active” rust control products keep moving parts like brake cables and lock mechanisms lubricated, resulting in less seize-ups and quicker repair time if components do need to be replaced. In addition many of the costly repairs on computer chips and electronic components are actually caused by corrosion of these electrical parts.  A properly formulated rust inhibitor can also prevent corrosion of these sensitive areas, drastically reducing these repairs as well.
  5. Safer vehicle – A rusty vehicle will eventually have its structural integrity compromised. Rusty vehicles do not fare as well in collisions as the corroded parts often cause the panels to collapse in ways the manufacturer had not intended. From a general “frame strength” standpoint, a rust-free frame is stronger than a corroded one.
  6. Environmental Impact – Each year millions of vehicles are sent to the “scrap yard” or recycled as they come to the end of their life. By protecting a vehicle from corrosion, more of the vehicle’s metal and components can be recycled and reused, reducing the amount of waste that is created. In addition by lengthening the lifecycle of vehicles in general, reducing corrosion can prevent millions of vehicles from retiring prematurely. One more car on the road instead of in the “scrap yard” benefits the earth and we are talking about millions of vehicles that could be on the road for even 2 or 3 additional years before
