Summer isn’t over yet y’all! Carolina Shag Radio returns for a limited time to SiriusXM Spotlight! Hear the forbidden rhythms of the American south’s ‘50s & ‘60s R&B that was made popular on the shores of the Carolinas and continued through the decades, thanks to a tricky dance step called the Shag.
Carolina Shag Radio launches Aug. 22 on at 12 pm ET on Channel 4.

[embedded content]

For those who’d like a little more history on Carolina Shag music, here’s how it all began:

In the years following World War II, young people in the south flocked to the beach pavilions and juke joints of the Carolina shore to dance to the Rhythm and Blues they weren’t hearing in their more conservative hometowns.

They developed a dance they called “the dirty shag” – a slowed down offshoot of the jitterbug. And the R&B they were moving and grooving to began to be known regionally as “Beach Music.”

As summers in the ’50s and ’60s rolled by, a generation of “shaggers” came of age dancing beachside to the latest R&B, music from artists like The Drifters, Billy Stewart, Jackie Wilson and more. The ’70s brought a new wave of Beach Music by show bands like The Catalinas, Fantastic Shakers, The Band of Oz and The Embers. But the sound kept the beach bars full and The Shag alive and well.

Today, The Shag is the Official State Dance of South Carolina, and North Myrtle Beach is a living shrine to the history of the dance and the Beach Music that gave birth to it.

Carolina Shag Radio lives year-round on channel 701 through the SiriusXM app on smartphones and other connected devices, as well as online at siriusxm.ca.

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) partnered with SiriusXM for the launch of a permanent channel called The Billy Graham Channel (Ch. 460) which debuted on Aug. 20.
The channel is headlined by the inspiring messages of the late world-renowned Christian evangelist and will feature his timeless sermons from his many years in ministry.

Since last November, for Graham’s 99th birthday, The Billy Graham Channel has appeared as a limited-run offering on four occasions, including a tribute channel in conjunction with his passing in February.

“We’re excited that SiriusXM Radio will have a permanent Billy Graham Channel,” said Franklin Graham, CEO of the BGEA. “Many people have told us how much it has meant to them to hear my father’s timeless messages of truth. I hope everyone will check it out!”

The BGEA, based in Charlotte, N.C., was formed in 1950 to carry the message of Jesus Christ throughout the world by every effective means available. The BGEA’s audio ministry, Billy Graham Radio, accomplishes that mission by producing a number of online and broadcast programs. To listen to the programs, visit www.billygraham.org/radio.

Multi-platinum, award-winning Niagara Falls-native Tim Hicks is back with his fourth studio album, ‘New Tattoo,’ and he’s Live @ SiriusXM this week sharing songs & stories from the studio and stage! Tim compares releasing an album to a new tattoo, saying both stick with you forever! His daughter may have helped pick the title track based on her quick study of the catchy chorus…
[embedded content]

The album’s first single “LOUD” was officially licensed by the NHL for broadcast during the 2018 playoffs, which is no surprise for Tim Hicks fans. Tim was stuck on yearning for a one-word track title similar to Luke Bryan’s ‘Fast.’ The song was written as soon as someone asked him, “What word describes Tim Hicks?” He also reminds me that music is just as much of a team sport as hockey is.

[embedded content]

‘What a Song Should Do’ was a collaboration with a few other Canadians, one who had just been kicked out of a session for her writing style elsewhere. This song is almost a jab at the person who kicked her out…because the definition of a GREAT song can vary from person to person. What a song should do is really up to the ears that hear it!

[embedded content]

If you’ve been following Tim’s music since the beginning, you know he grew up saying, “I was born 30 years too late!” He’s always loved classic rock like Bon Jovi and Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones mixed with the Canadiana of Blue Rodeo & The Northern Pikes. Tim is right when he says, “I have a hard time filtering out my influences, and more so than ever on this record.” I can hear ‘em and I like it! No surprise, he chose Bon Jovi for his cover song:

SiriusXM announced today that Bob Lefsetz, outspoken music and culture writer, will host Lefsetz Live!, a new weekly talk show on the VOLUME channel, talk radio devoted to the discussion of music, the industry and the world beyond.
Lefsetz is the author of The Lefsetz Letter, an independently produced email newsletter and blog about music and culture that has been published for over 25 years. Lefsetz Live! will take a page from Lefsetz’s influential column with free-ranging thoughts and a brutally honest approach at examining the music industry, while delivering a weekly live, interactive show.  Lefsetz will take calls from listeners and invite fans and industry notables in on the discussions of exploring the issues at the core of the music business—from streaming to new tech, to emerging artists and trends, and the music itself. Guest post by Vince Beretta
Having been in the auto retail industry for nearly my entire life, I often get asked for advice on “What I should do for my next car?”

I was recently called upon by my friends Kathleen and Neal (K&N) and I thought their story might make for a good story.

K & N use their car for going to and from work, dropping off kids, appointments, Home Depot, grocery shopping, getaways, etc.. K’s parents have a family cottage that they frequently visit in the summer and fall.

Neal has a work truck and a 2015 FWD Ford Escape that that they leased for 36 months with a 60,000 KM allowance.

The Escape is coming to the end of the lease in October, and K asked what should they do next? In order to give them a fulsome answer I needed some information.

Q. What is your budget? And do you want to finance new, lease or buy with cash?
A. We want to buy used and pay $10,000 to $14,000, and we want to pay cash.

Q. What kind of vehicle do you want?
A. A small SUV or station wagon.

Q. How did you like the Escape?
A. It’s great, suits our needs.

Q. How many KMS are on the odometer? And what is your over KM penalty?
A. Currently we have 69,000 (9,000 over) and the penalty is twelve cents.

Q. How many more KM do you expect you’ll have in October?
A. We estimate 75,500

Q. What are the condition of the tires? Do you own snow tires for the Escape?
A. We just got two new ones, and we own a set of snows on steel rims.

Q. Do you have any damage that you would have to repair if you returned it and what might it cost?
A. Yes – and we had it estimated at about $800 to have repaired

Q. Would you repair it if you kept the car?
A. No

Q. How much can you buy the Escape under the terms of their lease?
A. $12,000

K thought that I was going to recommend that they simply buy-out their Escape and she was right. But first we needed to know its “market value”. I asked K to check various online sources to find Ford Escapes close to theirs.

I quickly calculated what it would cost them to return their car at lease-end. They would have to pay $1,860 in over kilometer fees (15,500 x .12) and another $800 in estimated body repairs for a total of $2,660. Additionally they would lose their investment in their snow tires, unless they bought another Ford with the same bolt pattern and wheel size.

And as it turns out, their buyout price of the lease was well below the market of $15,000.

So, with this information it’s an easy decision for K&N to buy-out their lease, and drive this car for another six years. They’ll pay down their mortgage and contribute to their RRSPs instead of making car payments. By buying out this car they will actually save nearly $3,000 considering the penalties and the lost investment in their snow tires!

What do I do for my next car? Simple question, but not always a simple answer unless you know all the right questions to ask.

As they gear up for the August 24 release of new album RAINIER FOG (BMG), multi-platinum rock band ALICE IN CHAINS have announced a historic August 21 performance with SiriusXM atop Seattle’s iconic Space Needle.
The quartet — vocalist/guitarist Jerry Cantrell, vocalist/guitarist William DuVall, bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney — will be the first band ever to perform on the Space Needle’s brand-new “Loupe,” the world’s first and only revolving glass floor located 500 feet in the air.

“I’ve visited The Space Needle many times in my life and it’s going to be a real honor and a total trip for us to play there,” says Alice In Chains guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell. “We’re so proud of this album and to be able to celebrate its release with a performance at one of our town’s most iconic landmarks is really special. It sorta reminds me of the time we did the ‘Again’ video, but instead of being 6 feet in the air rocking out on a glass floor, we’ll be 50 stories high…slight difference.”

SiriusXM will broadcast Alice In Chains’ acoustic performance exclusively on August 31 at 5 pm ET on Lithium (Ch. 34) via satellite and through the SiriusXM app on smartphones and other connected devices, as well as online at siriusxm.com.

Listen live to Lithium now.

The band’s Space Needle performance is the latest in series of Seattle-based events that kick off August 20 with the Seattle Mariners hosting an “Alice In Chains Night” at Safeco Field. The game, which sees Seattle taking on the world champion Houston Astros, will include a pre-game listening event, a RAINIER FOG CD and an Alice In Chains t-shirt. For more info, click HERE.

On August 23 and 24, limited edition merchandise, rare photos, memorabilia, music gear and more will be on display at the Alice In Chains Pop-Up Shop and Retrospective at The Crocodile (click HERE for more info), to be followed by the band’s August 25 performance at KISW’s “Pain In The Grass” at the White River Amphitheatre.

Over the course of the past several weeks, the band has given fans a few sneak previews of RAINIER FOG, releasing “Never Fade” (click HERE to listen), “So Far Under” (click HERE to listen) and “The One You Know – click HERE to watch. All three songs are available as instant downloads by clicking HERE to pre-order RAINIER FOG ahead of its August 24 release date. The album will be available digitally, as well as on CD and limited-edition double 180-gram clear LP with white and black splatter available only from the band’s online store HERE.

RAINIER FOG marks a few firsts for the band: in addition to it being their first album in five years, it’s their first album for BMG and their first time recording in their hometown of Seattle in more than 20 years (worth noting that the album title is a tribute to Seattle). They recorded at Studio X, the same facility where they tracked 1995’s self-titled Alice In Chains album (back when the studio was known as Bad Animals). The RAINIER FOG recording process also saw the band spend time at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles and at the Nashville studio of producer Nick Raskulinecz. RAINIER FOG is the third straight Alice In Chains album recorded with producer Nick Raskulinecz and engineer Paul Figueroa. The album was mixed by Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Tool).

Backstage at the Carolina Rebellion music festival earlier this year, Cantrell talked with SiriusXM host Grant Random about how one of their new singles, “The One You Know”, was inspired by David Bowie.

[embedded content]

RAINIER FOG follows 2013’s Grammy-nominated The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, which entered Billboard’s Top 200 chart at No. 2 and debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums, Hard Rock Albums charts and the iTunes Rock Album Chart. Its first two singles, “Stone” and “Hollow,” both shot to No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and “Voices” hit No. 3. All three tracks stayed on the chart for over 20 weeks.

Alice In Chains recently added a third leg to their worldwide headlining tour. Dates are listed below and ticket info can be found HERE.

Over the course of their remarkable career, ALICE IN CHAINS have garnered multiple Grammy nominations, sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and amassed a diehard international fanbase whose members number in the millions. They remain one of the most successful and influential American rock bands of all time.

The Golden God himself, Robert Plant, is turning 70 on August 20.
To commemorate the birthday of one of the most recognizable voices in rock ‘n’ roll as well as the continued 50th anniversary of Led Zeppelin, Deep Tracks (Ch. 27) is diving into the archives to encore two exclusive radio events. Hear a SiriusXM Artist Confidential with Plant recorded in March 2005 and a SiriusXM Town Hall with Plant recorded in October 2017.

While discussing with SiriusXM host David Fricke his time as the frontman for Zeppelin and his enormously successful solo work, Plant described how he draws inspiration for songs, starting with the fact that he “always write[s] stuff down.”

“I think I’m always observant,” he said. “I see. I hear. I remark at the ridiculousness of my condition, and that kind of quite often gives me good fuel to sing about characters in songs who are actually me, but maybe they’re not.”

Hear the SiriusXM Artist Confidential this Monday at 6 am and 2 pm ET and hear the SiriusXM Town Hall the same day at 10 am and 4 pm ET.
