The Academy Postpones ‘Popular Film’ Academy Award

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who courted controversy earlier this year in announcing a ‘Popular Film’ , has now announced that it will not debut the new Oscars® category at the upcoming 91st awards. The Academy Award for ‘Popular Film’ was not entirely defined when initially announced, but was intended to recognize commercially popular films. The award was distinct from the Academy Award for Best Picture, and was not intended to compete with it.

While the Academy will be implimenting other proposed changes (including shortening and restructuring the length of the telecast to three hours), Academy CEO Dawn Hudson has noted the need for further discussion among Academy members for any additional award category.

“There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members,” Hudson explains. “We have made changes to the Oscars over the years—including this year—and we will continue to evolve while also respecting the incredible legacy of the last 90 years.”

The 91st Oscars will be held Sunday, February 24th, 2019 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network.
